What are the requirements of ISO 14001?
ISO 14001 requirements are made up of 10 ‘clauses’ which contain protocols, controls, procedures, measures and auditing methods. The first 3 have no requirements but consist of terms and definitions, the scope of the standard and the standard’s references which work to provide organisations with a better understanding of the standard and the associated terminology they might not be familiar with.
Clauses 4 to 10 of ISO 14001 contain requirements that businesses will need to implement, follow and set up in order to establish and manage their EMS. These clauses are;
- Clause 4 — Context of the company/organization
- Clause 5 — Leadership
- Clause 6 — Planning
- Clause 7 — Support
- Clause 8 — Operations
- Clause 9 — Performance Evaluation
- Clause 10 — Improvement
Some companies will already have many elements of the requirements in place, but it is the proper and thorough documentation of these processes, procedures and policies that is key to achieving ISO 14001 certification.
