As a business owner, you may have been awaiting the planned changes to ISO 9001 in 2023. However, the current version of this standard, ISO 9001:2015 remains unchanged, with members of ISO making the surprising decision not to go ahead with the much-anticipated update. The committee conducted a thorough review of ISO 9001:2015 and agreed that it should remain as it is, for now.
What is ISO 9001:2015?
ISO 9001:2015 was published in September 2015, replacing ISO 9001:2008. This remains the current version of ISO 9001. ISO 9001:2015 has been used for eight years, making it older than the 2008 version when it was retired. Naturally, this has led many business owners to wonder when they can expect an update.
Many members felt that there was no need to update ISO 9001 when the standard had already been so aggressively changed in 2015. Many organisations were forced to overhaul their systems to incorporate new concepts at this time, including risk-based thinking, organisational knowledge, and interested parties. Whilst the consensus is that ISO 9001:2015 remains relevant and effective in guiding quality management systems across industries, there is a growing feeling that a future update is justified to address a few larger global issues.
When will ISO 9001 be updated?
ISO recently voted to start to revise the ISO 9001 standard with immediate effect. This means that you can expect ISO 9001:2015 to be replaced by an updated version within the next few years. At the present time, it’s estimated that the new revision to the standard will be available sometime in 2025.

What will be different in the next version of ISO 9001?
Whilst we don’t know for certain what will be different about the next version of ISO 9001, there are a few core concepts that could be included. Concepts related to climate change could feature since ISO is keen to incorporate climate change language into all ISO standards. The new version of ISO 9001 could also address the topic of gender equality. However, with both climate change and gender equality, it’s not clear if the language will take the form of an explicit directive or an informative note.
