Andrew Sykes Group Ltd are the UK’s largest specialist hire company, with over 30 depots and hire centres throughout the country; specialising in pumps for hire, air condition, chillers and heaters.
Requirement
The Andrew Sykes Group Ltd approached us towards the end of 2006 with regards to implementation of their environmental management system that met the requirements of ISO 14001. The system had been designed by their group environmental manager but was not fully implemented; there were still some gaps to fill in particularly with relation to legislation.
They called upon JR Consultants to assist them with this stage; reviewing documentation, procedures and other supporting documents, and to help implement the system into the UK depots.
Solution
Due to the scattered amount of depots throughout the UK implementation was decided through continuous individual depot audits carried out with depot managers. This helped raise awareness to the system, particularly in relation to what was required by the depot, managers, and staff. The documentation was also reviewed and amended over the course of the audits, and this then issued to every depot as guidance prior to publishing a best practice manual.
By the final set of depot audits, environmental representatives had been allocated in every depot, and they were now responsible for the system. The Andrew Sykes Group Ltd was fully accredited to ISO 14001 by BVQI in early august 2007, and is now with the adventure of maintaining the system!

Tyler Packaging is a specialist supplier of Flexible Packaging for Industrial, Point of Sale and Agricultural applications. Based in Leamington Spa they operate a worldwide comprehensive range of packaging; films, sacks and bags for a variety of industries.
Requirement
Tyler Packaging approached us in the summer of 2006 with a request for a quality management system - ISO 9001, and an environmental management system – ISO 14001.
Solution
Tyler Packaging decided that they would like to achieve both standards separately to enable them to understand them both as equally. The quality system was designed and introduced with no problems at all; they achieved ISO 9001 accreditation within 4 months and with no major strain on company resources.
From this they were very keen to implement ISO 14001, and again, after much dedication gained accreditation to ISO 14001 by the end of 2006.
They are now however, one of the first UK companies to have achieved ISO 22000 for their food safety management system, which is something they never expected to have achieved.
Company Profile
Metal Colours Ltd provides Zinc and Zinc Nickel Electroplating, Electrophoretic Painting and Powder Coating services to industry nationwide. They were established in 1933 and are based on the Slough; serving the automotive, electronics, process engineering and general manufacturing industries.
Requirement
Metal colours approached JR Consultants in 2005 with a view to achieve ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Due to the nature of the business, it was a requirement by their IPPC license and the environment agency that they obtain an environmental management system and to them ISO 14001 was the approach they wanted to take.
Solution
We created a simple quality system that meet the requirements of ISO 9001; from start to finish ISO 9001 accreditation was awarded within a period of 5 months.
Implementing an Environmental Management system was a little more complicated to obtain due to environmental law and their IPPC license. Many of the controls stipulated in their IPPC license had to be included in the system to ensure they were controlled adequately in relation to water monitoring, testing and waste removal.
Initially there was some uncertainty because of its complication however after much hard work from JR Consultants and Metal Colours they achieved ISO 14001 in April 2006, and with our continued help are still maintaining this system to date.
